The Berlin Wall was a symbolic and a physical division between West and East Germany. At the end of World War II, the allied powers divided conquered Germany into four zones, each occupied by either the United States, Great Britain, France, or the Soviet Union. The same was done with the city's capital, Berlin. West Berlin became an island of democracy within Communist East Germany.

- Official figures show that at least 136 people died trying to cross the border. People attempting to get from East to West were regarded as traitors and guards were instructed to shoot at them if they attempted to cross, although not to kill them.
- The west side of the Berlin wall was covered in graffiti and the east side was untouched.
- Gorbachev's "Perestroika" weakened the communism hold
- November 9th 1989 is recognized as the date of the fall of the Berlin Wall, official demolition of it didn't start until June 13th 1990.
